A Night Out with Friends

Bob and I went to dinner at Belle-View East in Falconer, NY with our friends Garry, Linda and Don. Garry, Bob and I ordered prime rib dinners. Don ordered a fish dinner, and Linda ordered a Cajun shrimp dinner. Everyone except Don ordered dessert. Linda, Bob and Garry ordered pie; I ordered a turtle cheesecake. Our dinners were good, and we enjoyed each others’ company. Here’s a couple photographs of the five of us.

Hi Linda,From time to time, I read of your adventures. You always go into great detail about what you have eaten, where you have stayed, etc. What seems to be missing from your communications is anything personal, provocative or substantive about yourself and the people with whom you visit or share a meal. For instance, when you had dinner in Falconer (I've also eaten at the Belle-View East), you detail what everyone had to eat but there is no other information. What did you guys talk about? What makes these dinner guests interesting? What was the most memorable thing that happened at dinner? How do you feel about our new president and the current economic crisis? I'm sure these kinds of subjects were broached and it might be interesting to share your own views plus the views of your friends with your audience. Please do not construe my suggestions as anything but a honest attempt to be helpful. I have no interest in maliciously critiquing your attempt at providing something interesting to the people who may read your blog. On the other hand, if you find my comments untrue or just plain pretentious nonsense, you are obviously free to ignore them. Since my oldest son started college last fall at Berkeley, we were unable to spend our summer in western New York State for the first time in over 20 years. It is, however, our intention to spend our summer in Chautauqua County this year. I hope all is well with you and your family.Sincere regards,Gary d Johns

I've taken to heart Gary's suggestions in regards to my blog. I will attempt to add a little “meat” to our night out, as well as attempt to include more personal thoughts in some of my future blog entries. This was the first time I had eaten at Belle-View East. Bob and I have driven by this restaurant many times. Bob always would say in passing that we should eat there sometime. Bob had eaten at Belle-View East a few times in the past and said that the food was good. Several days ago Garry and Linda asked us to join them for dinner. We agreed and had set our dinner date for this evening. Belle-View East has the appearance of a bar, but the food served there is anything but bar food. Our topics of conversation were just mundane things, nothing extraordinary. For example, we seemed to talk a great deal about our food (how good it was and how plentiful) and the weather. Bob and Garry work at the same place; Linda and I work at the same place. As such, our evening conversation was peppered with anecdotes about working at either workplace. We talked a little bit about Bob's upcoming birthday; Bob's 50th birthday is in May this year. I want to have a backyard BBQ for family and friends to celebrate Bob's birthday. I hope to throw that party on the weekend following Bob's birthday, so I asked Garry, Linda and Don to keep that weekend open if possible. Interesting enough we talked very little about the economy or our new President. I don't think President Obama even came up in our conversation. Those two topics of conversation have come up so much in the past several weeks, it was actually nice not having it included in the evening's topics of conversation. By the way I am writing this at 3:51AM. I ate too much and as a result have a bad case of indigestion. It's actually taken a while for me to collect my thoughts, so I am feeling better now and will head back to bed. Thank you Gary for your helpful suggestions. I hope that we get to see you and your family when you come to Chautauqua County this year.
