My husband Bob’s 50th birthday was on Wednesday, May 6th. Bob took the day off work; he spent part of the morning and afternoon on a casino run. The weather cooperated, and Bob was able to make his run via motorcycle. Bob hit the casino in Salamanca, NY first. He lost $50.00 there; however, he won a free buffet dinner worth $20.00. Bob won the buffet dinner by spinning a wheel that you can spin only on your birthday. Spinning the wheel doesn’t cost anything. In the past we’ve won a casino sweatshirt or tee shirt by spinning the wheel. From Salamanca Bob went to the Presque Isle casino in Erie. The casino gave Bob $10 in free play plus a free buffet dinner for his birthday. Bob ate dinner and then played his $10. He racked up $80, with that free $10. So, in addition to two free dinner buffets, Bob is ahead by $30.00 from his casino run.
Later that same day, after I came home from work, we went to Red Lobster in Jamestown, NY for dinner. Red Lobster is touting its new wood-fired grilled dinners. I ordered a chicken dinner, wood-fired. Bob ordered a seafood dinner, also wood-fired. Both meals were quite delicious. We ordered dessert, too, to share. Our dessert of choice was an apple cobbler with ice cream. Soon after being seated at our dinner table, the waitress had asked if we were celebrating anything. I told her that we were celebrating Bob’s birthday. So when we were served dessert it arrived with a lighted candle and several of the Red Lobster staff singing “happy birthday” to Bob. Neither of us expected that!
So, Bob’s casino run and dinner at Red Lobster is how Bob celebrated his birthday. He didn’t want a birthday party. Well sometimes you get what you don’t want. This past Monday I decided that I would surprise Bob by having family and friends come here for cake and ice cream on Friday evening. I telephoned some people and sent out emails. I invited 35+ people. I realized that I gave our family and friends very short notice of the party. I was happy that Bob’s daughter, Stacey, and her boyfriend Mike, and a few of our friends from the neighborhood stopped by last night to celebrate Bob’s birthday. We had a GREAT time. Oh, and we did pull it off. Bob was completely surprised by his birthday party!
