Thunder, Lightning AND Blowing Snow!
It isn’t odd for me to be awakened at night. I am a light sleeper. However, it is unusual to be awakened by thunder, lightning AND blowing snow! This oddity happened around 1:30 this morning for about 20 minutes. The thunderstorm heralded in much colder air and a major snowstorm.

This is what our back yard looked like around noon today.
We have two weather alerts. A winter weather advisory remains in effect until 7:00 this evening. A lake effect snow warning remains in effect from 7:00 this evening to 4:00 PM Saturday.
I took the yardstick out and measured the snow in our front yard. As of 1:30 PM, there is at least 6 inches snow accumulation on the ground. Another 2-3 inches of snow accumulation is expected by this evening. Then another 6-10 inches of snow is likely tonight and Saturday. At the moment there is a lull in snow activity. Snow is falling, but lightly. Periods of heavy lake effect snows are expected later today through much of Saturday, as the wind shifts to a more westerly direction and carries significant moisture inland from Lake Erie.
My niece’s baby shower is tomorrow afternoon. It is a 2-hour drive from my house to the location of the baby shower. I have a big question mark right now because of current and anticipated weather conditions, as to whether or not my stepdaughter and I will make it to the baby shower.
We have had a mild Winter thus far. We have had only one Winter storm this season that resulted in measurable snow. We received under 6 inches of snow from that storm. We knew it was only time before Old Man Winter would release his fury on us!

We needed the snow here in Youngsville … the community sled riding party is scheduled for Sunday at 1PM. Free hot dogs and hot chocolate! And it's right next to our house!Marge
Well Old Man Winter waited this long, couldn't he have waited a few more days so you could get to the shower. If you go, drive very carefully.

I am envious…we just got a little bit…maybe an inch. It has blown so bad it is hard to tell…some places are almost bare and some look like a couple inches.Be Careful if you do go to the shower.
What strange weather Linda. I do hope you can make it over to your niece's tomorrow, and if you do safe journey.
Wow–that's unbelievable . As much as I love snow, that's too much for me to enjoy –especially when it's so cold outside… Good Luck —and be SAFE when you get out-and-about.Hugs,Betsy
We don't often get thundersnows around here, but I've heard about them on the weather reports. Fortunately we didn't get nearly as much snow as you did. Be careful if you try to make it to the baby shower.
That is too much of snow Linda and with the forecast of more snow, it is only going to make it worse. Please keep in mind that safety comes first than anything else!Ram
OMG, my first reaction is 'that is a wonderful scene', of course because we don't have it,nor experience it! Snow is alien! In fact, i still rememmber your photos last year, i think you posted a few of them. But if i were in that conditions, maybe i will not leave home. As George said, be careful if you decided to go to the baby shower! I hope it warms sooner.
Wow, that is unusual to have thunder and then snow. We sure need some snow in this part of the country. All our ski resort around here are closed because of no snow.
