A Sunday Drive

Yesterday, Bob and I went for a long drive.  We left Warren, Pennsylvania, at 9:30 am and did not return home until 5:45 pm.  We had no destination in mind when we set off on our drive, only to drive down U.S. Route 219 farther south than Northern Cambria, Pennsylvania.  Bob had ridden the motorcycle to Northern Cambria a few weekends ago.  He enjoyed the ride through largely forested areas and on mainly two-lane roadways.  Bob wanted to see what U.S. Route 219 looked like south of Northern Cambria.  The towns that we drove through included Wilcox, Johnsonburg, Brockway, DuBois, Luthersburg, Mahaffey, and Cherry Tree.  During our drive I followed along on the Google Maps app preinstalled on my iPhone.  I zoomed in and out to see what was near us and what was coming up along the way.  I recall doing the same thing while on travels earlier in our marriage, except a paper map served as my navigation tool.  The paper map was a more reliable tool, as it did not rely on cellular tower signals!

We stopped for lunch at Dairy Queen in Northern Cambria.  I ordered the quarter-pound Sweet Apple BBQ Grillburger; Bob ordered a Grilled Chicken Salad.  According to the menu, the Sweet Apple BBQ Grillburger is available only for a limited time.  When I am hungry for a hamburger again, I hope it is still available.  The Sweet Apple BBQ Grillburger was layered with crisp bacon, fresh onion slices, leaf lettuce, a slice of thick-cut tomato, pepper jack cheese, and a sweet apple BBQ sauce.  It was quite tasty.

While we ate our lunch, we discussed our travel options.  We decided to continue down Route 219 a little farther, then veer northeast to Prince Gallitzin State Park, which is located near Patton, Pennsylvania.

As we approached the state park we came upon Mud Lick Overlook.

Isn’t the view beautiful?

We walked down to the pavilion, and I took a couple more pictures.

From the overlook we drove a very short way to the entrance to the state park.  We parked at the marina, where I took another picture.

By then it was 2:30 pm, and we decided it was time to head back home.  We told the GPS to take us home; arrival time was estimated for 3 hours later.  Someday we would like to ride the motorcycle on U.S. Route 219 all the way to the Maryland border.

Here is a map of today’s route from Warren to Prince Gallitzin State Park.

It sounds as if you had a great drive. The scenery is certainly beautiful. That BBQ sounds delicious. We’ll have to see of our Dairy Queen has it.

Isn’t it fun just to get out and take a nice ride on a Sunday afternoon? We do that sometimes also… You obviously chose a wonderful place to visit… Gorgeous views. As GE said, we’ll have to see if our DQ has those burgers available… Sounds great.

    Hugs,

That looked like a great ride Linda, your photos are beautiful. You made a good point about the GPS and cell phone coverage. I guess you can’t beat the good old fashioned paper map in these situations.

Now that is our kind of travel…no destination in mind…just go a general direction. I have atlases of Illinois and Indiana…they are nice…but some roads are so short they don’t put their name/number on them. And then there is the fact that some roads are still listed as numbers in them but they have been given street names. Still, if I watch close I can usually get us to really rural spots.
