St. Patrick’s Day Weekend
Bob and I spent St. Patrick’s Day weekend in Erie, PA. We spent Friday and Saturday nights at the Avalon Hotel, right in the heart of the city. With the exception of watching the St. Patrick’s Day parade on Saturday, we had no itinerary for the weekend. We wanted a laid-back weekend away from home.
On Friday, besides driving to Erie, our main activities included dinner out and a TV movie. We ate dinner at Dominick’s 24 Hour Eatery, which was a 2 1/2-block walk from our hotel. Dominick’s is well known for its meatball omelet, made with homemade meatballs, provolone cheese and spaghetti sauce. The meatball omelet was Bob’s dinner choice. I ordered the homemade meatloaf, which included two big slices of meatloaf and mashed potatoes. Both the meatloaf and mashed potatoes were covered with gravy. The front desk clerk at our hotel recommended Dominick’s to us. It was a good recommendation. We both enjoyed our dinners. The movie that we watched was “One Day“. We missed the beginning of the movie. The movie held our attention. I wouldn’t mind watching the movie again, to see how the story began.

The Erie Playhouse is one of the oldest and largest community theaters in the nation. The marquee flashes all night long. Thankfully, our window curtains blocked the flashing lights while we slept.
Two buildings to the right of the Erie Playhouse is the Meiser Building. My attention was drawn by the beautiful copper doors, as well as the beauty of its entire facade.

I discovered via an Internet search that the Meiser Building dates back to 1911. The building was a fashionable dress store at that time, owned by Edith Meiser. The Meiser Building is now occupied by full service meeting and banquet rooms.
We could see the State Street / W 10th Street intersection from our hotel room. In fact being able to see State Street from our hotel room was a requirement for us to stay at the Avalon Hotel. We wanted to be able to watch Saturday’s St. Patrick’s Day parade from the comfort of our hotel room.

The tall building is Renaissance Centre. According to Wikipedia, the Renaissance Center’s 198-foot height makes it the tallest building in Erie. It was built between 1925 and 1928.
On Saturday morning, after a buffet breakfast at Benjamin’s Pub & Eatery at the Avalon Hotel, we went for a short walk downtown.

After our brief walk downtown we relaxed in our hotel room, waiting for the St. Patrick’s Day parade to begin.

Looks like a fabulous weekend. That Dominick’s sounds really delicious… YUM… Gee—it looked cold there. So glad you could watch the parade from your room…
