On This Day in 2007 – Our Outer Banks Vacation (Day 4)

The date was May 14, 2007.  Bob, Al and I toured the Outer Banks by motorcycle.  We rode all the way to Ocracoke Island, a distance of approximately 113 miles from Corolla, NC.

What did we see during our tour of the Outer Banks?  We saw the Wright Brothers Monument at Kill Devil Hills, just south of Kitty Hawk.  We didn’t stop at the monument.  We saw the 60-foot gray granite monument as we rode by.  We saw the the Bodie Island Lighthouse.  We didn’t stop at the lighthouse.  We saw the lighthouse as we rode by.  We crossed over the Herbert C Bonner Bridge, which connects Bodie Island and Pea and Hatteras Islands.  The sand dunes along both sides of Route 12 on Pea Island were remarkable.  We stopped at the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse in Buxton.

The Cape Hatteras Lighthouse is the tallest in the nation and a famous symbol of North Carolina.

After visiting the lighthouse, we continued on our ride to Ocracoke Island.  The islands of Hatteras and Ocracoke are connected via ferry boat.

The Hatteras-Ocracoke Ferry is free and runs often.  The ferry crossing took approximately 40 minutes.

While on Ocracoke Island we saw wild ponies (fenced in), the quaint village of Ocracoke and the Ocracoke Lighthouse.

We ate lunch at Howard’s Pub on Ocracoke Island.  Al and I ate Pamlico Sound Crab Cake sandwiches; Bob ate a Cuban Pork sandwich.  We enjoyed our lunches.

Our motorcycle tour of the Outer Banks was an all-day event.  We departed the beach house in Corolla, NC at 9:00 am and didn’t return back until 7:30 pm.  While we were touring the Outer Banks, newlyweds Stephanie and Jeff left for Virginia Beach.  We tried to get back to the house before they left; however, we missed their departure by a few minutes.
