Our Hawaiian Vacation: Parker Ranch

In mid-August my sister-in-law messaged me.

[Dorothy] Hi getting ready for your visit. Found some fun and different things to do this time around. Hope you are up for an afternoon of barrel rolling and cattle herding;-). Strange request I need both you and Bob’s height and weight please. Fun stuff lays ahead.

I provided Dorothy the requested information.

[Dorothy] Thanks, now you will be better matched for calf wrestling ;-).

We had NO idea ….

~~~~~
Early in the afternoon of Saturday (Sept. 1st) Dorothy, Bob and I drove to Waimea where we attended a rodeo. The rodeo, in its 44th year, was held at the Parker Ranch Arena. The rodeo is held each year as a fundraiser to provide educational scholarships for school-age children of Parker Ranch employees.
Schedule of Events
We stayed for only the first half of the rodeo.
_LG27683This was our view of the Parker Ranch Arena from the grandstand.
The first event was Po`o Wai U.  A single rider on horseback ropes the steer by the horns and maneuvers it to a forked stand (amana). The rider dismounts and ties a non-choke knot on the steers neck to the amana. The rider with the fastest time wins.
During the Po`o Wai U event we thought a steer’s horns had been pulled off!  We were happy to learn that the horns were plastic.
The second event was Calf Roping.
The third event was Wahine Breakaway Roping. Breakaway roping features a calf and one mounted rider, a woman in this event. The calf is roped, but not thrown and tied.
While we watched (and I photographed) the first few contestants for Wahine Breakway Roping, I deleted the pictures I took because I thought mistakenly that the contestant had not completed the event. I don’t have any still images, only the video.
The fourth event was Kane-Wahine Ribbon Roping.  Ribbon roping involves a team consisting of a cowboy and cowgirl. After the calf is roped, the Roper gets off to help the Runner get the ribbon that is tied to the calf’s tail. The Roper takes the ribbon and both the cowboy and cowgirl run to the finish line (a barrel).
The next two events were particularly fun to watch, as children were involved.
The fifth event was Sheep Riding.
The sixth event was Bull Riding.
_LG27786Great form!
_LG27790He is doing so well!
_LG27795Still holding on; his arm is still raised in the air too.
Are you wondering for what reason Dorothy needed our height and weight?  We sure didn’t participate in any calf wrestling!  You will discover the answer in an upcoming blog post.
