Bemus Point’s Fall Fest

We attended Bemus Point’s Fall Fest this afternoon. The Fall Fest began yesterday and continues tomorrow.

We parked along Sunnyside Avenue and walked to the Village Casino, window shopping at vendor booths along the way.

A portion of our walk was along Chautauqua Lake.
The Fall Fest included a classic car cruise-in.
We saw several classic cars being driven in Bemus Point.
We ate lunch outside at the Village Casino.
The Stow-Bemus Point ferry
made several crossings, while we ate lunch.
I ordered Chicken Lips and fries.
Bob ordered a Buffalo Chicken Wrap with potato tots.

Both meals were delicious.

After lunch, we walked from the Village Casino to the Bemus Point Golf Club. We found more vendor booths for window shopping. Several vendor items caught my eye, but no purchases were made.

We enjoy the walk alongside Chautauqua Lake so much.
What a beautiful day for a walk!
Beautiful flowers!

A Canadian Daycation: Lunch at Walker’s Country Market and Niagara Falls, ON

This blog post continues our daycation to Canada this past Saturday.  In my previous blog post I wrote about our visit to Niagara-on-the-Lake.

We departed Niagara-on-the-Lake around 11:30 am and began our drive on Niagara Parkway to Niagara Falls.

About half way between Niagara-on-the-Lake and Niagara Falls we stopped for lunch.  We ate lunch at Walker’s Country Market. This is a great little lunch place, off the Niagara Parkway, right next to the Living Waters Wayside Chapel. We purchased two turkey sandwiches (Oven Roasted Turkey Breast with cranberry orange sauce, mayo, walnuts, and romaine lettuce on multigrain whole wheat bread) and two peanut butter ganache brownies for lunch. We sat outside on bistro-style seating and ate our lunch. We would definitely return here for lunch, if in the area. I give Walker’s 5 stars! Next time I would hope that we would do a bit of browsing at the market. There was also fresh produce, jams, maple syrup, ice cream and more available for purchase.  Note to self: box lunches can be purchased at Walker’s Country Market.  A picnic-style lunch at Niagara-on-the-Lake would have been nice!

After lunch we took a few pictures of the Living Water Wayside Chapel.

Living Water Wayside Chapel

According to Internet sources, the Living Water Wayside Chapel is the smallest chapel in the world.

We were back on the road at 12:14 pm and arrived in Niagara Falls at 12:45 pm.

We parked in the Bird Kingdom parking lot ($3.99 for 2 hours).  We walked from there, just past the Hornblower Niagara Cruises entrance.  On hindsight I wish we had parked closer to the falls, as I may have been able to walk all the way down to Horseshoe Falls and back.  My arthritic knee was not very cooperative, while in Niagara Falls.

We would have had a good vantage point to watch riders on the zipline.  We stayed at this location for a while and stood alongside the cliff (where all the people are), waiting for someone to ride the zipline.  No one rode the zipline, while we waited.  When I asked if anyone would be riding the zipline soon, I was told that the tailwinds were too strong.

On the way back to our car, we walked through Oakes Garden Theatre.

Oh look … a wedding party!

We found a fish pond.

What a tranquil setting!

We stopped at the duty free store before crossing the Rainbow Bridge into New York. We made our purchases at the duty free store, namely bourbon and maple filled cookies. We returned to the USA at 2:30 pm. The U.S. Border control guard asked Bob to remove his sunglasses, asked him how tall he is and how much he weighs. She said our last name is a common name, and some people with that name have done very bad things.

Niagara Falls, NY was too crowded for a pleasant visit.  We will visit Niagara Falls, NY at a later date.

We decided to drive to Erie PA for dinner. We ate dinner at Texas Roadhouse. We had a 15-25 minute wait to be seated. It was worth the wait. Our dinners were good, although we brought enough home with us for another meal for each of us. Neither of us were as hungry as we thought we were.

We were back on the road at 7:50 pm.

We chased Saturday night’s sunset. We saw the setting sun, as we drove over the Interstate 86 bridge that crosses over Chautauqua Lake at Bemus Point, NY. We exited Interstate 86 at Bemus Point. We couldn’t find anywhere to park, as the Bemus Pops Concert series was happening that evening.

I snapped this sunset picture from inside our car.

Bob thought he could make it to the Interstate 86 Chautauqua Lake Rest Area before the sun set. We made it there in the nick of time.

I posted these three sunset pictures on Facebook, while on our way home from the rest area.  My Facebook friend Christi C. said it best, when she made the comment “You chased the sun till it dipped below the world and said good bye for the final time today!”

It was a very long day.  We departed home at 6:00 am and returned home around 9:30 pm.  We drove 340 miles.   It was a long day, but what a wonderful day we had!

Independence Day Ride

After watching Warren’s Independence Day parade, we rode to Erie and enjoyed our 4th of July meal at Quaker Steak & Lube.

From Quaker Steak & Lube we began our ride back home. We made a couple photo stops along the way. Our first stop was in Findley Lake, NY.

Findley Lake

Soon after we had parked, a man and woman rode in on a motorcycle.  We said hello, and I was reminded what a small world we live in. The man and woman are from Butler, PA and know Cadogan, the town that I grew up in.

Our second photo stop was at Long Point State Park on Chautauqua Lake.  This state park is located less than 35 miles from our house, but we had never stepped foot inside the park.  Earlier this year we purchased a New York State Empire Passport, which provides free admission to state parks in the state of New York.  We decided to check out this park.  Long Point State Park is a very nice park! There is a beautiful marina, very nice trails and a beach.

The tiger lilies provided a pretty foreground for the boats and lake.

the Marina

We walked a trail to the point. There were lovely views of the lake all along the trail.

This is the trail leading to the point. I was almost at the point, when I took this picture.

The Point

We returned to the marina, walking on the trail on the left.  We enjoyed the lovely views of the lake from this side of the point as well.

If you look closely, you will see a fishing dock.

The beach and beach house are visible in this photograph.

We are really getting use out of the Empire Passport.  I am happy that we purchased the passport this year!

Vacation at Home

I feel like we were on vacation this past weekend, without going very far from home.   I didn’t have to cook at all, Friday through Sunday.  We went for a motorcycle ride on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.  We attended the Roar on the Shore motorcycle event in Erie, spent time with a friend from Virginia who is visiting her family here in Pennsylvania, and we attended a water ski show in Bemus Point, NY.  What a great weekend it was.  I will share a few photographs from our weekend with you.

We rode to Erie on Friday, July 19th, to attend “Roar on the Shore”.

This year marks the seventh year that this event has been held in Erie. According to the “Roar on the Shore” website, this motorcycle rally was created to serve as a fund-raising event for a local charity. Proceeds from this year’s rally will benefit the Boys and Girls Club of Erie. “Roar on the Shore” is a 3-day event (Thursday-Saturday) and is held in downtown Erie, at Perry Square.

While in Erie we ate lunch at Molly Brannigan’s Irish Pub & Restaurant.  This was the view, while we awaited our lunch.  Bob ordered a Cobb Salad; I ordered a Pub Burger.  Both meals were delicious.  It was the first time either of us had eaten at this restaurant and would do so again.

This bar ice sculpture sat at the entrance to Molly Brannigans.  It sat outside in 90+ degree weather!

Besides admiring motorcycles parked along State Street and eating lunch at Molly Brannigans, we checked out several vendor booths (didn’t purchase anything) and saw the last few minutes of a motorcycle stunt show.  It was difficult to see the motorcycle stunt show, though, as a huge crowd had already gathered by the time we arrived.  As we were leaving, live music was playing.  The music sounded good; however, it was so hot in downtown Erie we opted not to stay.

On Saturday, July 20th, we went shopping in the morning at a garage sale in a town about 10 miles from our house.

We purchased a Radio Flyer wagon similar to the one shown in this photograph.  The seat belts are worn out or broken.  I ordered new seat belts yesterday.   The wagon needs cleaned out, too, before we take our granddaughters for a ride.  I am looking forward to taking the girls for a ride!

We ate lunch at a newly opened restaurant in our hometown, Christie’s Downtown Pub & Grille.

Christies1
We each ordered steak subs.  The steak is not shaved steak; it is a thick, tender cut of steak. The steak sub reminded Bob of a steak sub that was served in the 1970s at a restaurant called “Teddy’s” in downtown Warren.  The steak sub was delicious!

Later that day we rode the motorcycle to Sheffield and crashed a picnic.  Our friend, Denise, who is from Virginia is visiting her family here in Pennsylvania this week.  We surprised Denise with a visit on Saturday afternoon.  Bob and I got invited to dinner 🙂

By the way Bob and I were supposed to make a return trip to Roar on the Shore on Saturday to meet up with motorcycling friends from Pittsburgh.  There was too high of a probability of rain for our friends to ride up from Pittsburgh, so Bob and I decided not to make a return trip.

On Sunday, July 21st, Bob and I went for a ride around Chautauqua Lake.  The lake is located in New York about 30 miles from our home.  We intended to stop at Bemus Point and Chautauqua Institution and perhaps in Salamanca at the casino.  Our only stop was in Bemus Point.  We stayed in Bemus Point longer than expected.  We arrived in time to watch a 45-minute water ski show.  After the water ski show, we ate lunch at the See-Zuhr House and took a walk along the lake shore.

I took this photograph at the conclusion of the water ski show.  The photograph shows the perspective from which I took the photographs of the ski show.  We could see very well to the left and right of the floating stage, but had to look through musical instruments and speakers to see the jump board that was right behind the stage.  The water ski show was free.  Other performances will be held on Saturday, August 17 at 1:00 pm and again at 3:00 pm.

After the water ski show, Bob and I ate lunch at the See-Zuhr House. We shared a beef on weck sandwich and chicken fingers, as well as a peanut butter ice cream pie.

This is the peanut butter ice cream pie that we shared.

The next few photographs are from our walk along the lake shore.

the Floating Stage on Chautauqua Lake

If you are ever in the Bemus Point area in the summer, be sure to check out who is performing on the Floating Stage on Chautauqua Lake.   The Bemus Bay Pops concert series is something you will not want to miss.

The Bob Seger Tribute band called “Hollywood Nights” was performing, as we were heading out of town.

When we returned to our motorcycle, we found another motorcycle sharing our spot.
The other motorcycle was a Kawasaki Nomad, same as ours.
