Sunday Drive: Warren to Benezette

Bob and I went for a drive yesterday.  We were gone all day and covered a little more than 200 miles.  We drove along the Clarion River; through Brookville, DuBois and Reynoldsville; saw elk in Benezette and ate an early dinner in St. Marys before heading back home.

This blog post shares photographs taken during our drive from our hometown (Warren, PA) to Benezette, PA.  This portion of our drive is highlighted in the following map.

According to a Wikipedia article, the Clarion River is formed at Johnsonburg at the confluence of the East Branch and West Branch Clarion rivers. It flows generally southwest for about 110 miles, past the towns of Ridgway and Clarion, to join the Allegheny River. The name Clarion was given by surveyor Daniel Stanard in 1817 who thought the water sounded like a distant bird of the same name.

From River Road we drove over the Clarion River and continued following Rt. 36 to Brookville, PA.

I took this photograph of the Jefferson County Courthouse, as we were driving through Brookville.

From Brookville we followed Routes 322, 950, 219, 255 and 555 through Reynoldsville, DuBois, and Penfield to Benezette.  The only stop we made, before reaching Benezette, was in Reynoldsville.

I was able to remove the utility lines in this photograph.  Also, I made an attempt to give the photograph an authentic “feel”.

My next blog post will highlight the final leg of our day trip, Benezette to Warren.

Have You Ever …

Have you ever driven by a scenic spot and say (or think) you’ll stop next time to take a picture? We have driven by the location shown in the following two photographs too many times to count. Each time we’ve driven by this particular location I would say “that is pretty”. Bob has asked each time I’ve made that comment if I want him to turn around so I can get a picture. My reply each time has been “no, just keep going”. Well, yesterday, when the scene presented itself and when Bob asked if I wanted him to turn around after I had made my customary comment, I answered “YES!”.

This scene was on one side of the road.

This scene was on the other side of the road.

It was worth stopping to photograph these scenes, don’t you agree?

Where were we going, you might ask, when we passed by this stream?  We were on our way to a Halloween party.

Halloween Decorations

The Halloween party was not at this house. We couldn’t, however, resist making a stop at this house to take a few pictures. It sure was well decorated for Halloween! More photographs of the decorations at this house follow.

Enchanted Woodlins

On Saturday I wrote about driving to Brookville, Pennsylvania to buy a pair of work boots for Bob. After we left Jack’s Boot Shop, we didn’t drive straight home. As Brookville is a 60-mile drive from our house, we decided to make a day out of it.

After shopping at Jack’s Boot Shop, we ate lunch at Plyler’s Buffet & Family Restaurant. The restaurant is located in Brookville too. We both ate from the buffet, which provided a wide variety of country-style cooked food, salads and dessert. The food quality was excellent; everything tasted very good. I did have one complaint though. Three of the hot food selections were not hot throughout The food temperature of those three selections was differing levels of lukewarm to hot. As we were checking out, I mentioned my disappointment with the cashier. She took 15% off our bill. I wasn’t looking for a discount on our meals. I just wanted to make her aware of the problem. It was good customer service to apply a discount to our meals. We would eat there again.

We didn’t go straight home after lunch. We drove home by way of Ridgway and Kane, which added approximately 30 miles to our day’s drive. We have driven through Ridgway numerous times while on our way to visit relatives in Virginia or to go to my brother’s camp near St. Marys. We’ve stopped a couple times in Ridgway but only to get gas and eat at a couple restaurants. We stopped in Ridgway for a short time on Saturday. We walked a couple blocks down and back up the main street.

Ridgway, Pennsylvania is a borough in and the county seat of Elk Country.

When driving through Ridgway I have always admired the wood carvings that line the street. I photographed several of these wood carvings during Saturday’s walk.  The wood carvings are are known as “Enchanted Woodlins” and include animals, totem poles, and other sculptures.

Big Boot

Display Boot at Jack’s Boot Shop

Today Bob and I went to Jack’s Boot Shop in Brookville, PA. I’ve seen signs for another Jack’s Boot Shop, in Corsica I believe. It is possible then that Jack’s Boot Shop is a chain store. We had never set foot, though, in a Jack’s Boot Shop. The Brookville boot shop opened recently; it still has the smell of new wood. The store sells motorcycle attire such as leather vests, leather jackets, leather chaps, and Tour Master jackets; throw-over-the-seat leather saddle bags; back packs; duffel bags; Columbia rain attire; Carhartt jeans, outerwear and shirts; Under Armour apparel; socks; gloves; hats; and, of course, boots…LOTS of boots. I don’t believe I have seen so many different brands of boots in one store!

For some time Bob has been looking for a pair of steel toe work boots as comfortable as the pair he has been wearing, which are now worn out. Bob preferred to purchase the same brand/style of work boot; however, that work boot is no longer available. With the selection of boots available at Jack’s Boot Shop, it didn’t surprise me when Bob found a new pair of boots.
