I felt earthquake tremors this afternoon. I was sitting on the front porch, in a low-back plastic chair, reading a book on photography. It felt like something was trying to move my chair. I got up out of the chair, picked it up and checked the legs (thinking the chair was going to break on me). The legs were solid as always. I put down the chair and sat on it again. I still felt the moving-the-chair sensation. I got up and went inside. I opened Facebook. The first entry I saw was my cousin Toby’s status “Earthquake!”. The epicenter of the earthquake was in Mineral, VA, only 10 miles east of where my cousins Ann and Vince (Toby’s parents) live. Everyone is okay; they suffered no property damage. The earthquake measured 5.8 and was very unusual for the East Coast. There have been scattered reports of damage to homes and commercial buildings, including falling masonry at Washington’s National Cathedral. The Washington Monument will be closed indefinitely after engineers found cracks near the top. The earthquake also prompted precautionary shutdowns of 10 nuclear power plants in Maryland, Virginia, Pennsylvania and New Jersey and the evacuation of the Pentagon and the U.S. Capitol.
A 5.0 magnitude earthquake has been confirmed by Channel 4 news in Buffalo, NY.
According to Channel 4 news, “a 5.0 magnitude earthquake centered at the Ontario-Quebec Border Region, as defined by the United States Geological Survey, struck the Western New York region this afternoon.
“The earthquake seemed to last for about 30 seconds in Ottawa and rattled downtown buildings, homes in west-end Ottawa and government offices across the Ottawa River in Gatineau, Que.
“The Internet is abuzz with people saying they felt the earth rumble around 1:45pm EST.
;”The News 4 newsroom has received reports from as far as Jamestown of a tremor that lasted from 30 to 45 seconds in most cases.
“Our sisters stations in Indianapolis, Grand Rapids and Springfield, MA have received calls in their newsroom about the quake also.”
I felt the earth shake too!
I was sitting at my desk on a chair, which has wheels. I heard some kind of a sound like the air conditioner coming on and at the same time my chair started to move/roll. I remember feeling startled at the time. It felt like someone had taken hold of my chair and shook it. The movement lasted for a few seconds. I didn’t think anything of the movement after it stopped. I just kind of shrugged my shoulders … weird is all I thought. A few minutes later I got on Facebook to see if I had any messages. I saw the Warren Times Observer newspaper status announcing breaking news, asking if anyone felt a tremor in Warren to call the newsroom. I called the newsroom.
