Easter Vacation 2011

Bob and I extended the Easter holiday and went on vacation to Virginia Beach, Virginia. We spent 1 night in Winchester, Virginia; 4 nights in Virginia Beach; and 1 night in Bedford, Pennsylvania.

The highlights of our vacation included:

a brief stop in Tappahannock, Virginia;

soaking up the sun and warmth on the oceanfront while in Virginia Beach, Virginia;

visiting the Norfolk Botanical Garden with friends;

spending Easter Day with friends;

driving over the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel; and

visiting Assateague Island, Virginia, on our way back home.

Here is a slideshow with photographs of the highlights of our vacation.

I want to mention one other vacation highlight, one not so pleasant. En route Virginia Beach we spent one night at the Best Western Lee-Jackson Inn in Winchester, Virginia. The AC receptacles in our room were worn to the point that anything plugged into them would simply fall out, without even a nudge. That night my husband emailed Best Western International in regards these AC receptacles, stating that they might be considered a hazard in some locations. The next morning, after showering, I plug in the hotel’s hair dryer …

BOOM
A FLASH OF LIGHT

The hairdryer shorted out when I attempted to blow dry my hair.

I went to the hotel lobby and asked the desk clerk if he had a hair dryer that I could borrow. The desk clerk makes a joke out of my question by looking in his pockets for a hair dryer. I told the desk clerk that this was not a laughing matter. I turned on my camera and showed him the photograph displayed above. His manner changed at that point. He found me another room, where I could use the hair dryer to dry my hair. He was very apologetic. I didn’t allow the story to end here. We hung around until the office manager showed up at 8:00 AM. I related my story to the office manager. We received our money back for the night’s stay.

Easter Dinner

We shared Easter dinner with our friends, Valerie and Michael. If you have been reading my blog, you might recall that Valerie is one of my blogging friends. I wrote about meeting Valerie and Michael here.

Dinner was ready when Valerie and Michael arrived at our house at 2:00 PM. They brought me a beautiful bouquet of flowers, which I handed to Bob to put in water.

Easter Bouquet

We enjoyed a dinner of spiral ham, scalloped potatoes, green beans, corn pudding and ambrosia. For dessert we had cheesecake, which Valerie and Michael brought with them. Everything was delicious, and everyone got their fill of food.

After dinner we showed Michael and Valerie our Nintendo Wii. Neither of them had ever seen the entertainment system. It surprised them the variety and number of activities that we could do on the Wii. Valerie tried a couple of the games and had fun playing them.

Throughout the afternoon we discussed a variety of subjects, many of which were conducive to becoming better acquainted with each other. As Valerie and Michael left for home (around 6:30 PM), we talked about getting together again soon. Michael and Valerie will have us come to their house for a cook out, and Valerie and I will get together sometime this week to go for a walk at the Audubon Center. I look forward to both activities.

Easter Sunday

I met my husband on Easter Sunday in 1998. Easter fell on April 12th in 1998, same as today! It is the first time since 1998 that Easter Sunday fell on the same date that we met. Pretty cool huh?

Bob and I went to a friend’s house for Easter dinner. We were the only non-family members invited. We have attended other family events hosted by Garry and Linda over the past several years. We always have a good time.

Here’s a group picture of all 12 of us, plus Oliver. I used my new Gorillapod, securely fastened to the top of a chair, to capture this photograph.

Dinner selections included ham, korv (Swedish sausage), scalloped potatoes, coleslaw, corn pudding, carrots, ambrosia, banana bread, rolls, and an Easter egg chocolate cake for dessert. We ate heartily; everything tasted good.

Garry and Linda hid Easter baskets for Tyler, Kyle and Cheyenne to find. All three children enjoyed looking for their Easter baskets.

Here’s a picture of Cheyenne when she found her Easter basket.

Here’s a picture of all three children, with their Easter baskets.

This photograph has a special effect applied to it. I isolated my main subject and blurred the background by applying Photoshop Elements’ radial blur filter. Pretty neat effect, isn’t it?

I hope everyone had as an enjoyable Easter as Bob and I did.

The Legend of the Dogwood – An Easter Poem

The Legend of the Dogwood
In Jesus time, the dogwood grew
To a stately size and a lovely hue.
‘Twas strong & firm it’s branches interwoven
For the cross of Christ its timbers were chosen.
Seeing the distress at this use of their wood
Christ made a promise which still holds good:
“Never again shall the dogwood grow
Large enough to be used so.
Slender & twisted, it shall be
With blossoms like the cross for all to see.
As blood stains the petals marked in brown
The blossom’s center wears a thorny crown.
All who see it will remember me
Crucified on a cross from the dogwood tree.
Cherished and protected this tree shall be
A reminder to all of my agony.”
