A Story about Bob and a Motorcycle Seat

Two weeks ago my husband Bob placed his motorcycle seat on top of the Nissan while working on the motorcycle in the garage, as that was the closest “safe” place within reach at the moment, and forgot about it. Bob was installing the wiring for a new battery tender and had gone inside to let it charge a bit. Bob forgot that the motorcycle seat was on top of the Nissan, when we left for dinner with our friends Garry, Linda and Don.

When we got home from dinner, Bob decided to look at the light on the battery tender. Then it dawned on him. Bob looked in the cargo basket; the motorcycle seat was not there. We lost the motorcycle seat somewhere between our home and Falconer, NY. We didn’t feel (or see) anything fall (or fly) off the Nissan. Bob telephoned both our local police department and the NY state police. No one brought in, or reported seeing, a motorcycle seat. We took a drive up State Street and up Route 62 as far as Route 957 to see if we could find the motorcycle seat. Our search was fruitless. Bob was really bummed and kicking himself for losing the seat. Not any motorcycle seat would fit Bob’s motorcycle. The motorcycle seat had to be specifically manufactured for his year and make of motorcycle.

The next day Bob retraced his steps again. He drove up State Street and parked the Nissan. He walked back alongside the guardrail, thinking possibly that his motorcycle seat may have flown off the Nissan and over the guardrail. He didn’t find his motorcycle seat. Bob realized his only hope to get that seat back would be for someone to find it and turn it in.

Four days later (March 12th) Bob told me that he had found a seat for his motorcycle! He purchased the seat on eBay from a Buy it Now auction late the previous night. The motorcycle seat was at Pinwall Cycle Parts in Massillon, Ohio, and Bob wanted to drive out there to pick it up. Bob telephoned the dealer at 4:00PM and spoke to a woman who said she would pull the seat out of shipping. The conversation ended with Bob saying he would see her the next day (Friday the 13th). Driving to Ohio to pick up the seat provided a good opportunity for a weekend of R&R, so I made a hotel reservation for two nights near Akron, OH.

At 9:30AM on Friday the 13th Bob received a telephone call from Pinwall Cycle Parts. The telephone call was from the woman with whom Bob spoke the previous afternoon. She told Bob that she was not able to pull the motorcycle seat from shipping because it had already been shipped. Less than 24 hours from the time Bob purchased the motorcycle seat, Pinwall Cycle Parts had already shipped the seat. Now that is quick service! We were packed already, so we decided to go ahead with our plans for a weekend of R&R.

A week had passed since Pinwall Cycle Parts had shipped Bob’s motorcycle seat, but Bob had not yet received it. Yesterday afternoon Bob telephoned Pinwall Cycle Parts to ask for a tracking number. Guess what? They never shipped the seat! Bob could have picked up the seat last weekend, as he had hoped to. Apparently, there was a mix-up in the communication between the woman who Bob had talked with last week and the shipping department. Pinwall Cycle Parts closes at 5:00PM on Fridays. Bob decided he wanted to drive to Massillon OH, pick up the seat and come back home. We left home around 1:00PM, reaching Pinwall Cycle Parts at approximately 4:45PM. Bob picked up the motorcycle seat, and we turned around to come home. We returned home at 9:15PM. Bob is happy that he now has a motorcycle seat. Soon after coming home Bob left the following as his Facebook status:
