Thanksgiving Day

This was not a usual Thanksgiving Day for Bob and me.  It was only the second time in our 15-year marriage that we stayed home for Thanksgiving.  The majority of our Thanksgiving Day holidays have been spent in Virginia or in New Hampshire at either Bob’s brother or sister’s house.  We stopped going to Virginia for the Thanksgiving holiday, when Bob’s brother and our sister-in-law moved to Hawaii.  In 2010 we spent the holiday at Longwood Gardens in Kennett Square, PA.  We ate a traditional Thanksgiving dinner that year at the Concordville Inn Restaurant in Concordville, PA . In 2011 we spent the holiday in Niagara Falls, Canada.  We ate dinner at the Market Buffet, located in the Casino Niagara. It wasn’t a traditional Thanksgiving Day dinner but good nonetheless.  Last year we once again spent the Thanksgiving holiday in New Hampshire with Bob’s sister and our brother-in-law, where we enjoyed the company of family and the great taste of traditional Thanksgiving Day fare.

Thanksgiving Day, this year, was a laid-back affair.

Around 10:00 AM we met Stacey, Mike and the girls at Betts Park, a local park in our hometown of Warren, PA.  Earlier this month Bob and I purchased an L.L. Bean sled for Harper and June.  Yesterday morning Grampa took the girls for a sled ride.

Harper and June didn’t have fun in the snow only by going for a ride in the sled.  After the sled ride, the girls played in the snow.

We parted ways, when leaving Betts Park.  Stacey and Mike took the girls home for a nap.  A few hours later Stacey, Mike and the girls went to Mike’s parents’ home for Thanksgiving Day dinner.  It wasn’t mentioned; however, I believe the four of them went to Stacey’s mom and stepfather’s house later in the day.  Bob and I spent rest of the day at home, enjoying the company of each other.  We watched a movie,  “We’re the Millers”.  The movie is a comedy, and there were a few opportunities for a good chuckle.

Bob and I talked about eating dinner out; however, we opted to stay home.  I didn’t prepare a traditional Thanksgiving Day dinner; however, we did have turkey.

It was a great Thanksgiving Day dinner for two people who are watching their carbohydrate intake!

Later in the evening Bob and I played a game of Scrabble.  I can’t remember the last time we played Scrabble.  It has been a couple of years at least!  We had a good game, and Bob came out the victor.

This is how we spent our Thanksgiving Day.  How did you spend your Thanksgiving?

Thanksgiving 2012

We spent the Thanksgiving Day holiday in New Hampshire with Bob’s sister, Cynthia, Cynthia’s husband Larry, and Larry’s mother Marion.   Except for witnessing a three-vehicle accident in Vermont on Thanksgiving Day, while traveling Route 9 en route New Hampshire, and wintery conditions for the last 100 miles on our way back home on Saturday, driving conditions were good.  The traffic accident was a little too close for comfort.  I am thankful that Bob and I were not involved in the accident and that there were no serious injuries as a result of the accident.  We encountered white-out conditions on Interstate 86 / Route 17 in New York on Saturday on our way back home.  I am thankful that the first 400+ miles were driven in good driving conditions and that we made it home safely!

We had a great visit with Cynthia, Larry and Marion.

On Friday Bob, Larry, Cynthia, Weezie and I went for a walk at the Ponemah Bog Wildlife Refuge.

It was really cool that we saw a great blue heron, while at Ponemah Bog!

We returned home around 7:00 pm last night.  I hope everyone who reads this had a great Thanksgiving Day holiday as well!

Our Thanksgiving Vacation – Thanksgiving Day Dinner

In my past six blog posts I’ve written about how we spent our Thanksgiving holiday. On Wednesday we visited Brandywine Park and zoo in Wilmington, DE. On Thanksgiving Day we visited Longwood Gardens in Kennett Square, PA, where we enjoyed the sights of “A Longwood Christmas”. We ate Thanksgiving Day dinner at the Concordville Inn Restaurant in Concordville, PA.

Thanksgiving dinner turned out to be a nice affair. We had our concerns at first. We had dinner reservations for 6:00 PM. We only had to walk across the parking lot from our hotel to the Concordville Inn Restaurant. We approached the restaurant at the closest access. Entering the restaurant, we were told politely that this particular entrance was not for the Thanksgiving dinner buffet. We were directed to a side door.

We arrived about 10 minutes early for our reservation. There was a long line. I ascertained that the people in front of us had 6:00 PM dinner reservations as well. After a few minutes we learned that the line that we were in was the paying line. We had to pay for our dinner, including an 18% gratuity, BEFORE being seated! We waited in the paying line for about 15-20 minutes. While in line we noticed two parties were seated immediately, ahead of others that had been there first. We learned later that there was a party in the “staging area” that had 5:00 PM dinner reservations and had not yet been seated!

When we reached the cashier, there was no record of our reservation. I had made our dinner reservation on line via the restaurant’s website. Apparently, there were two meals being served that day at the restaurant — an a-la-carte dinner and the Thanksgiving Dinner Buffet. I was only aware of the Thanksgiving Dinner Buffet when I made our dinner reservations. When I explained to the cashier that I had made our dinner reservation on line, she informed us that we were supposed to use the other entrance. We explained that we attempted to enter via that entrance but were directed to this entrance. The cashier then placed us on the 6:00 PM reservation list. We paid for our meals and entered the staging area, where we waited for an available table.

While in the staging area we noticed parties who had come in after us were being seated ahead of us. At the same time that we noticed that larger parties were being seated ahead of us, another couple made the same observation. We quickly decided to join forces and create a party of four. We informed the cashier of our decision. Immediately, a table became available. The couple that we joined forces with was Irene and Paul, who lived nearby. The food was bountiful and delicious. I am happy that we shared the evening with Irene and Paul. We didn’t exchange email addresses. That’s sad because it would have been nice to keep in touch with them.

Thanksgiving Day Part 2

On November 25th I wrote that we were on our way to New Hampshire to spend the Thanksgiving holiday with Bob’s sister and our brother-in-law.

We arrived at Comfort Inn in Merrimack, New Hampshire around 11:30AM. After checking into our hotel, we relaxed for a little over an hour before driving over to Cynthia and Larry’s house. Soon after arriving at Cynthia and Larry’s house we sat down to Thanksgiving Day dinner. In addition to the four of us, we shared dinner with Larry’s mother (Marian). Dinner was delicious. Cynthia and Larry prepared a bountiful feast of turkey, peas and onions, mashed squash, green beans, stuffing, gravy, corn pudding and cranberry salad. For dessert we had a choice of two kinds of pie — pecan or cherry — and pumpkin roll. We visited for a while after dinner and played with Weezie, Cynthia and Larry’s two-year-old dog. We happened to be at Cynthia and Larry’s house for Thanksgiving two years ago when Weezie first joined the family. Weezie has grown a LOT since 2007!

Bob and I left Cynthia and Larry’s house around 6:00PM with plans to return at 8:30 the next morning.
